The Rise of Jamaican D’s Food Truck: Bringing Authentic Jamaican Cuisine to Philadelphia
Jamaican D’s Food Truck in Philly
The demand for diverse and authentic cuisine is on the rise in the United States. This is especially true for food trucks, which are attracting customers who seek unique and delicious culinary experiences.
Jamaican D’s aims to establish itself as the go-to food truck for high-quality Jamaican cuisine in Miami, Florida. The company will target a diverse customer base that includes professionals, students, and individuals who are interested in trying new foods.
Authentic Jamaican Food
Authentic Jamaican food served right on the streets of Philly. Chef Calvin is always friendly and helpful. The line can get longer than a braiding shop on a busy day, but a medium platter of beef patties, curry goat and jerk chicken will last you a few days.
The food is surprisingly good for a small truck, and the staff makes the experience as fun as possible. They have a full menu with a variety of sides including mashed sweet potatoes, plantains and macaroni and cheese. The jerk chicken is very tasty, although they could do more with the spice.
This is the first time that a Jamaican truck has been on campus, and it’s already become one of the most popular trucks at Temple. The owners are proud to have brought this cuisine to students and hope it will continue to grow. They have other restaurants in Philadelphia, and they’re hoping to open more trucks soon.
Tacos
The tacos served at jamaican d’s are the perfect balance of savory and sweet, thanks to their sweet plantains and grilled jerk chicken. The truck also serves a variety of other dishes such as curry chicken, brown stew chicken and jerk chicken wings.
The food at this Jamaican-inspired eatery is influenced by the Spanish, British, Chinese and Portuguese cuisines. It uses a lot of chicken, shellfish and spices like allspice, cinnamon, ginger and pepper.
This isn’t the first time that Jamaican D’s has brought its flavors to Temple students. The owner operates three other trucks and a restaurant in the Philadelphia area.
The small establishment gets a lot of love from the community, including raving reviews on Yelp. The truck’s employees, such as cook Mark Gordon, are happy to see so many people enjoying their work. They’re even happier to know that they can bring the same flavor to more people with their Postmates delivery service.
Jerk Chicken
Jamaican D’s serves up classic dishes like curry chicken and jerk salmon that can spark your tongue with subtle heat. Their cinnamony sweet potatoes are a pillowy, neutral counterpoint to these robust flavors.
Jerk chicken is traditionally made with dark cuts of chicken (legs quarters, thighs, drumsticks). They are richer tasting and inherently juicier than white meat. This allows the bold marinade to shine through. This recipe uses a mixture of Scotch bonnet peppers (remove the seeds to reduce the heat), allspice, and fresh ginger.
This incredibly flavorful dish is perfect for entertaining. The marinade can be prepared a day or two in advance, and then the chicken is quickly grilled until well browned. The dish is finished with a generous sprinkle of thyme, green onion and freshly squeezed lemon juice. These garnishes bring the full range of Caribbean flavors to each bite.
Side Dishes
Aside from the meaty curry goat and stewed oxtail, Jamaica D’s also offers vegetarian options like BBQ jerk jackfruit. These can be paired with the usual Jamaican sides, such as rice and peas, mac and cheese or cabbage and pineapple cornbread.
While the truck serves fusion tacos, West said that it couldn’t be a Jamaican restaurant without offering traditional dishes. He even went as far as to find authentic Jamaican pimento wood, which is hard to source in the area, to give the jerk chicken its signature flavor.
His customers love what he has to offer, judging by the lines of people waiting for their order. And he hopes to keep the good vibes going as he expands his business to other cities.
